Southwest-Style Addition

This charming smaller house is located in the Chihuahua Hill district of Silver City. Its new owners relocated from Seattle in 2009, inspired by our Southwest sunshine and friendly atmosphere. Although the house has an enviable view of our local mountain ranges, they knew they would need some additional space to be truly comfortable. They chose to add on a master bedroom that opens onto a new porch and deck. They also made the house more energy efficient by insulating the floors and adding foam insulation and new stucco to the exterior. To complete the project they remodeled the older porch to match the new one and updated the master bathroom.

It was important that the house reflect the local Southwest style while being more maintenance-free. Some of the design elements we used to achieve this goal were:
Post and beam porch structures with cactus pine ceilings
  Maintenance-free Trex decking and railing
  Replaced wood siding with stucco
Solid wood flooring to match existing
Glass block windows in bedroom for light as well as privacy
New bathroom layout with tile shower, new cabinetry and fixtures
